<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> We are having a celebration of life party that day as well. We thought that would be a nice way for everyone to celebrate his life with us on his birthday, even if you cannot attend the party.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our family has started a new tradition whereby when we have family gatherings, we light a candle in memory of Collin. It helps us fill the void left by his absence. With such a close knit family, we have a lot of family dinners and such, and it was a little odd the first couple of times we sat down to dinner without Collin there. The candle helps us remember that he is gone but not forgotten.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Thank you!

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Love,

We have a couple of fundraisers in the works! Please help us cover the outstanding medical and funeral expenses!!

Cuff Bracelets

One of Julie and my friends from high school is making cuff bracelets to sell, with 100% of the profits going to help cover Collin's bills. (For those who are wondering, we are still planning to do the rubber style bracelets as well - they are in the works.)

Please click HERE to go to the Etsy website where you can order these bracelets. Thank you!

Benefit Show

I told Collin a long time ago that Aaron (my boyfriend) and I were going to put on a benefit show for him. He was so excited, and he spoke of it to me often. At first after he died, I wasn't going to do it. After some thought and incredible support from the Indianapolis music scene, I decided to go forward with it. We have scheduled an adults only (21+) benefit show for June 10th. There will be a full line up and other information posted as soon as we have it confirmed. We hope to do an all ages show sometime this fall so that Collin's friends can attend one. For now, we are doing a smaller, adult only benefit show (mostly because I couldn't secure an all ages venue!). Mark your calendars!

Keep checking back for more! : )

Thanks!

We have been really worried about some of the children that were close to Collin. We know that many of them may be coming to the services this weekend. We thought we should warn you all that this is going to be an open casket funeral. We want to help you all prepare your children for as much as possible. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help your child. Thank you!
We are still going to do the date night, just later on when things settle down a bit. I am extending the due date for any contributions to March 25th. Please have your donations delivered to the office (Wilson, Green and Cecere, 3011 W Smokey Row Road, Suite B, Bargersville, IN 46106) or have it postmarked to P.O. Thank you so much for your help. We really appreciate it. Now more than ever, I really think Julie and Heath are going to need some escape time to themselves. I'll let you all know what we end up planning and when. It will be at an appropriate time once things settle down a bit.

As always, advise with any questions or concerns you might have. Thank you!
Today, as we expected, the doctors called for a Care Conference. Julie, myself, and our father went into a large conference room with about 20 doctors and nurses. (Our mom and Aunt Martha tried to get there, but didn't in time.) They told us that there is nothing more that can be done for Collin, and we should consider terminating his treatment, reducing the amount of treatment, or stopping part of the treatment. They said that the odds of him surviving at this time are pretty much zero.

So, Julie decided, with the assistance of Heath and the rest of the family, that we will be stopping treatment on Collin tomorrow, Wednesday March 23, in the afternoon hours sometime. They will stop treatment whenever Julie is ready. Riley Hospital will be making plaster molds of Collin's foot and hand for Julie and her family to keep. The Hospital is also doing everything they can to keep Collin and all of us comfortable and such during this very difficult time.

Julie has said that anyone who would like to visit may do so, tonight and tomorrow. Anyone who would like to be in the room when we stop the treatment may do so (unless Julie changes her mind last minute, of course). Anyone can be in the hospital waiting room or whatever when we stop the treatment as well. If you do not wish to visit him before we stop treatment or be there, we totally understand and do not want anyone to feel obligated to be there. Everyone will cope with this tragedy in their own way.

We do not know how long Collin will be with us after we stop treament. The doctors have said that we probably only have a couple of days until Collin passes away on his own because he is bleeding heavily internally, but they are not sure where. That is why Julie and the family decided to stop treatment so quickly. However, when we remove the vent, he may breath on his own for a time - we have no idea how long. Julie and I believe he will breath for a few minutes at least. He could last minutes, hours, or longer, but it is unlikey that he will last very long.

The doctors have found blood in his vent and in the tube pulling bile from his stomach, in addition to the blood coming from his mouth. They aren't sure if it is swallowed or aspirated blood, but they know he is bleeding somewhere because he is going through a lot of red blood cells (blood transfusions) and platelet transfusions. That is the biggest indicator of the bleeding. They said the fact that the CT showed nothing yesterday could mean the bleeding wasn't bad enough then to see. They aren't sure. Either way, Collin is showing many signs that it is getting close to the end, and the doctors do not want to keep torturing him with this aggressive treatment that can be painful at times if he is not going to survive, and neither do we. They said the high bleeding will take him in a couple of days at most if we do nothing.

Today, we were told that Marion County has no more blood platelets available, and the hospital was short. Please donate blood and blood products in Collin's honor. Even though it will not reach Collin in time, please do this to ensure there is plenty of blood for others. Thank you.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, if you want to help, etc. Email or text is best. At this time, we just would like to encourage you to keep donating blood and blood products to ensure another child doesn't go without the lifesaving blood they need. If you would like to make cash donations to cover the medical bills or other costs, please let me know or see the "How to Help" page on this blog. I will advise you all as soon as I know when the funeral arrangements will be.

I am so very proud of my sister. She decided a few weeks ago that Collin will be an total organ donor once he is no longer with us. This means that they will be permitted to take whatever they can use. Julie says that maybe Collin's purpose was to save another child's life. I am so glad she decided to do that!

That is all I have for now. Let me know if you have questions, etc. Seriously, you are not a bother. Let me know what is confusing, etc. I'll keep you all updated as best I can.

Julie and our entire family thanks you all from the bottom of our hearts for your love and support throughout this ordeal. We love you all.

Love,
It came back empty - meaning that they did not find any bleeding on it. The doctors told us that they did not find any gastric bleeding and that they would talk to us further tomorrow. So, no conference today. We were not sure if we were going to have it anyhow, because we aren't sure if they are going to ask for one. Maybe they will ask for one tomorrow.

The one thing that they did find on the CT scan was that the contrast was not getting through his bowels. So, they are going to stop the feeds, because if contrast is not getting through, then likely the feed is not either. So they are backing off with the feeds - I'm not sure if they are backing off on the medication to help try and get a bowel movement. We will find out more in the morning.

Thank you!Aunt Sissyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01811007670486678239noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8621032199988074339.post-87410084160936196792011-03-21T14:54:00.000-04:002011-03-21T14:54:18.305-04:00CT Scan TodayHello All:

Today, Collin's bilirubin is at 19.2. He still has no bowel movements or bowel sounds. The doctors are now suspecting that he is bleeding in his stomach or intestines because he increased in the amount of blood and blood products that he was using. Plus, the bile they are pulling out of his stomach is almost black. If they find bleeding, then they are going to likely stop the feed and everything going into his digestive system (Miralax, etc.).

They are going to do a CT scan today to check for internal bleeding and other potential problems. They will be doing one with contrast and one without contrast. The reason is that the contrast can mask bleeding because it all becomes a white blob - infection and bleeding, other problems, a lot of them show up as just a white blob. So, they will do one with contrast and without and compare the two. They are doing that around 4 pm today.

I asked the doctors today what is the highest that a biliruben can get before we start to have brain damage or other problems. They said that there are not many studies done on Collin's age group, most studies on this are neonatal. But, they said they have seen kids get up to 40 and 60 before. So, while it is high, we are not quite to the crisis level yet.

He is more yellow today. His head is yellower than the rest of him. The doctor told me that the jaundice starts in his head and moves to the feet. Then when it goes away, it starts in the feet and goes to the head. They said that the yellowing and jaundice is to be expected.

They reduced his vent to 26 from 28 today to try and get him on a lower rate. Remember, the lower the pressure and rate of the vent, the better, because it prevents long term lung damage. He is taking a few breaths on his own when he is awake still, but not many. When I say a few, I mean the number only goes up like two or three points.

His skin is still healing nicely overall. He still has a lot of sores, but we are putting "Riley Butt Cream" on them, and it is helping. We put Aquaphor on the rest of his skin to help keep it from tearing and such.

The renal doctors visited us, but they did not do much. There isn't much for them to do right now but watch and maintain. Kidneys are not the big concern right now. Liver and the possible internal bleeding is the big concern.

He has not really woken up today much. He was awake a little earlier, but he is pretty sedated. So he is kind of in and out. He is still not opening his eyes.

That is all I have for now. Remember, if you want to contribute to the date night, please have your donations postmarked by tomorrow, or get them to me by tomorrow. Send me an email and let me know it is coming so I can watch for it! Thank you so much!

Also, please keep donating blood and blood products. Collin is using a lot of them, so please keep the supply strong for him and other patients!!! Thank you!

Love,

I apologize for not putting up an update yesterday. I typed it, but my computer ate it! Then I didn't have time to redo it.

Yesterday, Collin's biliruben (liver enzymes) went up to 15.7. Today, it is up to 17.1. Yesterday, they started giving Collin Miralax to try to get his bowels to move. We still have no bowel movements and no bowel sounds. His belly is continuing to swell up, and they are now measuring it frequently to keep track of the swelling. His belly is hard to the touch again, as well.

Yesterday (or maybe Friday) they started weaning him off of Versed (sedative), and Dilaudid (pain med) and putting him on Adavant (anxiety) and Methadone (pain). They also started him on Peptamen Junior, which is a similar product to Pediasure, to feed him through his NJ tube. He is getting 10 ml an hour now of feed. The Peptamen comes pre-made, so it is easier on the nurses. They were mixing Pediasure and Pedialite together.

Yesterday, I got Julie away from the hospital for a couple of hours to go to Caleb's birthday party (our brother's son) and then we went shopping a little. Today, we are decorating Collin's room with Easter decorations, and Collin's immediate family is visiting. I am going to spend the night at the hospital tonight and Julie is going home. She has a dental appointment to get her teeth looked at at 7 AM tomorrow. So I will stay the night with Collin tonight and work from the hospital today and tomorrow.

We may have a conference with the doctors tomorrow, we are not sure. We will keep you posted on what they say. Thank you for your patience and support.

Love,
They will put it back in if necessary.

That is all I have for now. I'll keep you posted as I learn more. Thank you!Aunt Sissyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01811007670486678239noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8621032199988074339.post-72340610745856282011-03-18T13:42:00.001-04:002011-03-18T13:43:01.732-04:00Still on a DownturnSorry I did not get an update up yesterday. I had a vicious migraine and I could barely move. So, for those who were trying to get ahold of me yesterday, I apologize that I did not respond. I was in bed all day and couldn't bear to open my eyes! I feel much better today, though.

Collin's bellireuben (liver enzyme number) went up from 14 yesterday to 14.6 today. The doctors do not know why his bellireuben is going up instead of down. Yesterday and today's rounds with the doctors were very quiet. Normally, there is a small herd of doctors and nurses, and they are all very talkative, throwing out ideas on what to do that day and such. But, Julie said that the last couple of days have been very quiet. Dr. Goebel, who is Collin's amazing stem cell doctor right now (they are rotated throughout the hospital, so Collin doesn't always have the same doctors), had the same look on his face today that he had on his face when we had the "care conference" on Monday, March 7th - the day that we thought we were going to lose Collin and we thought we were going to have to stop treatment soon.

The doctors are not making very many changes today to Collin's treatment. The only change for today is to cut back his feeds via the NJ tube by half. They have been giving him lactose free Pediasure, diluted with Pedialite. There is still no bowel sounds or bowel movements. This is day three of Collin getting feeds through the NJ tube to try and stimulate his bowels, with no luck. Additionally, his belly is swelling back up again, and it has become hard to the touch again.

Basically, Collin has the doctors stumped at this point.

Yesterday, Collin had to have another new "art" line (arterial line, the one in his arm that gives the most accurate blood pressure read and allows for blood draws). It took the medical staff three tries to put it in because Collin has so much scar tissue on his little arms. They are running out of places to put things! First, a nurse tried, then a resident doctor, then a staff doctor tried and finally got it in. They have replaced that line several times because it keeps clogging up or something. Poor Collin, he is like a pincushion right now! The doctors and nurses are trying to prevent it, but they have to have that "art line" because of the blood pressure problems. The new line is in his right arm.

Yesterday, physical therapy and occupational therapy came to see Collin and they brought down a little splint for his left hand. It is just a soft piece of material that crosses the palm of his hand, and then goes across the top of his hand and wraps around the writs. There is a soft cylinder in the palm of his hand to prevent his hand from "clawing" any more than it already has. "Clawing" is the term used to describe his hand being curled up into a fie

PT and OT came down yesterday and brought down a little splint for his left hand. It is just a soft piece of material that crosses the palm of his hand, then goes across the top of his hand and wraps around the wrist. There is a soft cylinder in the palm of his hand to prevent his hand from “clawing” anymore. “Clawing is what they use to describe the hand pulling into a fist because the tendons and ligaments are tightening up from non-use. His hands and legs are both doing this. They cannot put a splint on the arm with the "art" line in it, so they just put a washcloth in that hand (his right hand). They also put some soft splints on his legs as well to help keep those ligaments and tendons from tightening up. They are soft, unlike the hard walking splints he had before - the ones with the motorcycles on them. As we would expect, Collin does not care for these splints at all!!

Collin is still receiving a lot of platelets and blood transfusions. His white blood cell counts are good, but we are struggling to keep his platelet counts and hemoglobin numbers up. Hemoglobin is from the blood transfusions. So, please keep donating blood and platelets in honor of Collin Neese to make sure there is plenty of blood and platelets for Collin and other Hoosiers! We really appreciate it!

Also, if you are interested in donating for the date night for Julie and Heath, please have all of your donations to me or postmarked to P.O. Luckily, the older two kids have spring break starting a week from today, so that will help. If everyone could donate $5 or $10, we could make a very spectacular date night for Julie and Heath! I am also welcoming any suggestions you may have for what to plan. We want to keep some of it a surprise, so email me instead of posting comments on here! Let me know if you are donating and if you have any questions or suggestions!

Again, I apologize for yesterday, Julie and I were both feeling sick and did not respond to people in a timely manner.

Please continue to pray and think about Julie's friend and the friend's child. The child was rushed into emergency surgery today because the brain shunts that are draining the fluid that is building up around his brain as a result of the cerebral palsy were not staying in place. They are doing everything they can for the child, but they do not think there is anything else they can do for him if they cannot get them to stay put.

Please continue to pray for this child, for confidentiality, we will call him "D." He is in very serious condition and needs all the help he can get.

Thank you!
Aunt Sissyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01811007670486678239noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8621032199988074339.post-51954787761657431282011-03-16T18:14:00.000-04:002011-03-16T18:14:50.899-04:00Turn for the WorstCollin took a turn for the worst today. His biliruben/ liver enzyme number is up to 14. This is higher than it was on Monday, March 7th when we thought we had lost him. We are not sure yet what this means.

The ultrasound the doctors did yesterday on his liver showed that Collin's liver is starting to swell back up again. The swelling is actually "back swelling," which means that nothing is getting through the liver. There is still fluid around his liver as well. The doctors are giving him another medication to help with the biliruben/ liver enzyme number and help the trial liver medication (Defibrotide), but they are not sure that is going to work.

The doctors and nurses are also giving Collin Pedialite through his NJ tube (the tube they put in his nose yesterday that goes down into his intestines), and they are going to give him some Miralax through his NJ tube as well to try and get his bowels to move. They want any stool that is in his bowel to move because they do not want his intestines to become infectious, and they also want to try and lower his biliruben/ liver enzyme number by flushing out anything that may need to be flushed. As I mentioned the other day, without regular bowel movements, Collin is not flushing out the enzymes and other stuff, so his biliruben/ liver enzyme number is skewed because bowel movements are how we get rid of those enzymes. They also want to check his bowels for any blood that may be collecting.

We had blood pressure issues throughout last night and day today. They are, of course, still monitoring this closely. We had trouble early this morning with this heart rate going up, so the nurse gave him a bolus (an extra dose, rather than a slow drip) of sedative to help settle him down. They are continuing to decrease one of his sedatives to try and get him to wake up more. We are having a little more bleeding out of his mouth than we have had in the last few days.

His skin has become more yellowish than it was yesterday. It is still healing like it was yesterday, it is just "ICU tan" again, or jaundiced. He is also more swollen again overall than he was yesterday. Julie had planned on leaving the hospital for a few hours today, but changed her plans after Collin took this turn for the worst. Let's hope he bounces back soon.

That is all I have for now. Hopefully I will have more to post later today.

Thank you for your love and support during this very difficult time. As always, call me anytime, for any reason. I'll do my best to respond promptly! : )
My mom corrected me. I could not figure it out. Biliruben is the liver enzymes that they measure to determine Collin's liver's condition. That number is the one that is having problems going down because of the bowel movement issues, which they put an NJ tube in to try and deal with. I just wanted to put this correction up!

As some of you may know, Julie has some serious teeth problems. Her mouth doesn't produce enough saliva, so her teeth are in really bad shape. Of course, being the super mom that she is, she keeps putting off getting them taken care of because she is taking such good care of Collin, Kasey Susannah, and Zack (with Heath, the super dad's help!) Her teeth are so bad that Collin's doctors actually told her yesterday that she needs to get them taken care of. She uses Oralgel constantly and they are really causing her a lot of pain. I really wish I could just pay to get her teeth fixed for her!

The other day, we finally got her to go to the oral surgeon to find out how much it will cost to get her teeth fixed. She will have to have some very extensive procedures done to fix them. This is part of the reason she has been putting it off - 1. because of the time she will be down with the surgeries, and 2. because of the cost. It is going to cost over $25,000.00 to fix her teeth. OMG!!

We have such an amazing support network of family and friends. You all seem so resourceful and creative, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how we can help Julie get her teeth fixed? Of course, the first problem of down time is going to be easy to fix (we just have to find a time when Collin is stable enough). The money is the real problem.

Of course, we do not want to ask for any more donations, you have all given so much (for that, we thank you!). I was hoping maybe someone knew of a program or something that might help. You are such a creative group of people, I was hoping someone could think of something! I just thought I would bring this problem to your attention and see what you all thought. Between Collin's medical bills and such, this poor family is just getting hit left and right. But, Julie and Heath are amazingly resilient and are putting their children's needs before their own, I am so proud of them! : )

Thanks!!

Love,
