Since our last update, he has been improving a little everyday. He is still struggling with some pain from the surgery and some diarrhea, but it is being pretty well controlled by medication. He had his first physical therapy session yesterday in three weeks. The physical therapist reports that he is actually at the level that he should be at this point, even though he had some time off. He is such a tough little man!
He met the psychiatrist at Riley Hospital who specializes in oncology and stem cell kids on Wednesday. It was more of an intake than anything else. They are going to try him on a mild antidepressant to help balance out his mental and physical issues. They are going to start regular counseling when he goes into Riley for round six of chemo. The doctors told us that they normally don't put children on antidepressants, but it is actually pretty common to put an pediatric oncology patient on mild antidepressants because of the extreme side effects of chemotherapy and the emotional and mental toll that cancer takes on a patient.
He got to go to school today for a little while. He got to participate in the Christmas party with his class. He started to feel a little rough while at school, so he climbed up into the loft in his classroom and laid down for a minute. He still gets pretty overwhelmed with crowds and big activities these days, and wears out easily. But, he is improving a little more each day!
Later today, he is going to go help his siblings pick out their Grandmother and Grandfather Wilson's Christmas tree. He is really excited about that. Tomorrow, he is going to go to Incredible Pizza Company with his Aunt Sissy (me) and Aaron, and then have a sleepover at her house. During Thanksgiving weekend, I had planned a trip to Incredible Pizza Company and a sleepover for all three kids at once. However, Collin couldn't go because, as you remember, he was hospitalized and struggling with eating. So, I promised him at that point that if he would work hard to start eating again, that I would take him to Incredible Pizza Company, by himself or with his siblings, and have a sleepover. He told me the other day that he kept up his side of the bargain, so I had better keep mine! It was so cute! He is really excited, and keeps asking if it is Saturday yet.
As always, we are so grateful for your support and love you have given our family during this difficult time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Merry Christmas!
PICTURE OF THE DAY:

This is a picture that I found of Collin when he was 4 or 5 years old. I keep telling him that he is really strong because he rode a 2200 lb horse alone (which he did, but I didn't get a picture of it). He didn't believe me until I showed him this. Isn't he cute? |
